An embargo on a press release is a request from the sender. The sender asks journalists not to publish the news before a specific date and time. In the Netherlands and Flanders, this is a common practice, but it is not a legal contract.

The word promises that the sender will provide the information early, in exchange for the journalist's promise to wait. The request is the only binding part: the sender commits to giving early access, but the journalist is not legally forced to wait.
